Why Irish?

why-irishWhy Irish? is an annual colloquium hosted by the Department of Irish Language and Literature. It brings international speakers to campus to examine the fole of the Irish Language in various disciplines.

2009 Colloquium

Professor Kevin Whelan, Director, Keough Naughton Notre Dame Center, Dublin will give a lecture at the University of Notre Dame's annual WHY IRISH? colloquium

The lecture is hosted by the Department of Irish Language and Literature and is open to the public. It will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, 16th of October in the Hesburgh Center Auditorium. Professor Whelan's lecture is titled "The Sporting Irish".

This is a free public lecture on the rich and storied sporting legacy of the Irish people at home and abroad. Professor Whelan is an acknowledged expert on Irish history and culture and in this 2009 WHY IRISH? lecture he addresses the role of sport in Irish culture and answers the question - Why Irish and sports? Why are sports important to the Irish and how did they excel? A must for all true Irish supporters.
